Chris Paul

HoopScoopOnline 6/13/02:In the old days (prior to the internet) it would be time to stop the presses. If you will recall, tomorrow we plan to publish our updated rankings of the top players nationally in each class and the word we're getting is that 6'0 Jr Chris Paul from Clemmons (West Forsyth) NC totally dominated Five-Star's Hampden-Syndey, VA session. Previously we were going to rank Paul #15 in the junior class nationally, but Stu Lash, who is the recruiting coordinator for Five-Star, tells us that we'd better find a spot in our top 10 for this outstanding point guard, who reminds us in many ways of 6'1 Raymond Felton from Latta (H.S.) SC. Paul not only was named the Most Outstanding Player in the Camp, but he also was named the Best Playmaker, the MVP in the Playoffs, and was the leading scorer for the week with 21.5 ppg in the regular season and 28.0 ppg in the playoffs. He also scored 40 points in the semi-finals of the playoffs and led his team to an undefeated season in both the regular season and the playoffs. In other words, Paul had one of the most dominant weeks in the history of the camp. And, if that weren't enough, Lash reminds us that as good as Paul was on the court, he's probably a better person than he is a basketball player. So obviously Wake Forest head coach Skip Prosser is pretty excited about the prospects of having Paul, who committed to the Demon Deacons last month, and 6'2 Justin Gray from Mouth of Wilson (Oak Hill) VA, who signed with Wake Forest last fall, in the same backcourt a year-and-a-half from now. Also solidifying his current #29 ranking in the junior class nationally by the HOOP SCOOP was 6'7 Jr Linas Kleiza from Rockville (Montrose Christian) MD, who scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds en route to Orange-White All-Star Game MVP honors. Kleiza also was named Best Rebounder for the week, while 6'3 Jr. J.R. Reynolds from Roanoke (Catholic) VA was named Best Defender; 6'2 Soph James OnCurry from Mebane (Eastern Alamance) NC was named the Most Promising Prospect; 6'1 Soph Houston Power from Las Vegas (Durango) NV, who hit 55-60 free throws, was named the Foul Shooting Champ; 6'5 Jr Steve Villalona from Seminole (Osceola) FL was named Mr. Hustle; 6'2 Jr Pat Coyle from North Bethesda (Georgetown Prep) MD was named the Role Player of the Week; 6'2 Soph Devin Armour from Mouth of Wilson (Oak Hill) VA was named Mr. Stations; 6'3 Jr Jack Castleberry from Virginia (Cape Henry) VA was named Mr. Station 13; and 6'5 Soph Albert Ford from Goose Creek (H.S.) SC was named Most Improved. Notes From Five Star Camp By DeaconSports Staff Posted Jun 13, 2002 Chris Paul attended the Five Star camp this past week and showed once again that he is a big-time prospect. Inside Carolina checked out Chris Paul at the Five Star Camp this weekend and noted that Chris had a great week. He made the All-Star Team for the camp. The following is a blurb IC had on "CP3" from Five Star: "Chris Paul is just a joy to watch. Now dubbed "The Babyface Killer" by those in attendance, he shakes defenders with ease and is a surprisingly strong finisher. Paul knows how to lead his team, running the offense and directing teammates throughout. His defense is underrated, as he's quite a hassle for opponents. And, lastly, the nice, polite kid has a mean competitive streak in him that shows when necessary. All in all, the West Forsyth (N.C.) star is one of the best point guards in 2003. Over the course of the day, we had him down for about four-to-five assists -- per quarter. And, in the semifinals, his team led 28-10 after the first quarter -- and Paul had 23 of those points. He ended up with 40 on the game." For the rest of the story, check out Five Star Camp Report by Ben Sherman Leads Team To Camp Title by Dave Telep of Scout.com, June 13, 2002 at 10:43am ET Chris Paul Profile Chris Paul scored 40 points in a semifinal game and 21 in the finals as he led his team to the camp title at Five-Star. Paul was generally considered the best player at the camp and had a terrific week. He also scored 21 points in the Orange-White Classic All-Star game.
